Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between environmental modernization processes and trends in quality-of-life indicators within an environmental context. Indicators of the economy’s eco-intensity – i.e., the volume of pollutant emissions per unit of value added produced in the region—were used to characterize the level of environmental modernization. The share of negative air and water samples in the total number of samples tested served as environmental indicators of quality of life. The analysis showed that the processes of environmental modernization of production and the improvement of water and air quality are weakly correlated with each other and often move in opposite directions. To remedy this situation, it is insufficient to focus efforts solely on those indicators of environmental modernization of regional economic systems that are reflected in eco-intensity values. The conclusion formulates proposals for adjusting regional environmental policy.
