Abstract

The paper considers the evolution of voluntary market-oriented mechanisms of environmental responsibility. Based on the examples of independent international certification systems, their strengths and weaknesses are shown, some regularities of development are revealed, comparisons with national quasi-state certification systems are made, the probable role of the former and the latter in the regulation of future international trade relations is outlined. The authors believe that the importance of voluntary market mechanisms for regulating the environmental responsibility of producers will increase, even despite the observed processes of geopolitical fragmentation of the world market. This indicates the gradual formation of a “new normal” in the world economy, which is designed to ensure the protection of natural ecosystems and the protection of human rights in the production and trade of both consumer and commodity goods. Lack of understanding and failure to take into account these mechanisms create limitations and risks of reduced competitiveness for Russian exports.
