Abstract

The radical differences between resource-extracting transnational corporations (TNCs) and manufacturing ones make it impossible to mechanically copy the postulates of the existing theory of TNCs to Arctic resource companies. The authors suggest forming a theory of Arctic resource TNCs based on the triad: OLI-paradigm by D. Dunning, the concept of the resource cycle (chain) by I. Komar, and the foundations of evolutionary economics and economic geography. The development of resource corporations is understood as a constant increase and diversification of a portfolio of competencies. The use of “soft” criteria made it possible to identify 19 resource companies operating in the Russian Arctic. Three of these – NovaTEK, Gazpromneft, and Norilsk Nickel – are predominantly Arctic. The key characteristics of Arctic TNCs in the aspect of the theory put forward by the authors are shown through specific examples of activities these Russian companies pursued over the past two decades.
