Structural Transformation of the Economy of the Vologda Region: Analysis and Perspectives

Abstract

The paper examines structural shifts in the economy of the Vologda Oblast in 2016–2023 using methods of structural decomposition and shift-share analysis. It is shown that a positive contribution to sectoral dynamics is made primarily by the services sector (finance, IT, hospitality), whereas manufacturing and construction show a decline; the key growth driver is government consumption, with negative contributions from investment and net exports; in the sphere of income formation, a decrease in the share of gross profit is recorded alongside an increase in labor compensation. Based on the results obtained, directions for the region’s structural policy aimed at enhancing its competitiveness are identified. The conclusions drawn may also be useful in developing strategies for the socio-economic development of other regions of Russia.
