Abstract
The paper sets out to describe in simple language the essence of the concept of sustainable development, which is currently under scrutiny of foreign regulators, scientists, businessmen and public opinion, but is little known in Russia. Ignorance breeds mistrust of this concept in many people, contributes to dissemination of vulgar ideas about it and numerous speculations, which creates an additional risk of Russia falling out of the global agenda. The paper shows theoretical prerequisites of this concept, describing the history of its development and its main components. Some of the most significant scientific criticism of the concept is included. Finally, the paper lists factors that create economic incentives for transition to the sustainable development model as the dominant long-term civilizational model.References
