Abstract

Structural changes in the present-day financial system stimulate research into factors of such changes and modernization of analysis tools. The paper develops a methodology for analyzing the transformation of banking systems at the current stage of their evolution. The dynamic taxonomy approach proposed by the authors is applied to the analysis of the banking systems of the USA, Germany, China and Russia. The authors show the growing role of cultural and civilizational factors in the development of banking systems and the significant influence of the technological factor on the expansion of the diversity of types of banking institutions in the context of digitalization. The main conclusions consist in the absence of monolithicity and linearity in the development of the structure of financial and banking systems, as well as in the combination of invariant and specific features as the main pattern of shaping their taxonomy by country.
