Transportation in Asian Russia: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

The paper reflects the findings of research into the development of transport infrastructure in the Asian part of Russia based on the analysis of official documents, statistical data, as well as historical publications. The impact of economic sanctions on the transport and infrastructure segment and opportunities to overcome the negative consequences in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts, economic indicators justifying the author’s vision, implementation of major transport and infrastructure projects are considered. Summarizing the presented considerations, the author considers it necessary, both from the economic and military-political point of view, to continue the work on the design and construction of the North Siberian Railway, the Northern Latitudinal Railway and Belkomur. All three belong to the category of megaprojects that require in-depth studies of extremely complex engineering and geocryological conditions of their realization. The questions of development of transit cargo transportation, project financing, personnel support are considered.
