Abstract

The paper analyzes the level of wages of medical workers in Russia through the prism of the concept of employers’ market power in local labor markets. Using big data on vacancies in Russian medical institutions it is shown that the offered level of salaries is negatively and statistically significantly related to the level of concentration of local labor markets for most of the most common medical professions in Russia. This phenomenon is more pronounced in cities with a million inhabitants, which can be explained by a higher level of commercialization of medicine and, accordingly, greater flexibility of the system of remuneration of employees. At the same time, in the segment of less qualified medical personnel (nurses) the effect of market concentration on salaries is weaker than in the segment of more qualified medical personnel (doctors and paramedics). The latter is due to both a more significant shortage of personnel and relatively less flexibility of labor remuneration mechanisms for low-skilled medicalworkers. Based on the results of the study, a number of recommendations for the development of the labor remuneration system for medical workers in Russia are formulated.
