Abstract

The second part of the paper deals with a previously unknown aspect of solving the problem of oil product supply in Siberia in the 1920s and early 1930s through the production of artificial liquid fuel (ELF) from local coals. Coal refining was part of the general trend of the world energy industry of the interwar period. Here for the first time the process of transformation of this technology into one of the directions of industrial and technological development of the Ural-Kuzbass combine is described. It is shown that in contrast to oil exploration the production of artificial liquid fuel from solid combustible minerals in Siberia became the subject of attention not only of scientific community, regional authorities, but also of central authorities – VSNKh USSR, Gosplan USSR and STO. This led to a successful start of coal refining and allocation of the necessary funds for the organization of pilot production.
